Important Update: Temporary Transition to Online Instruction and Staff Work Arrangements

Posted on February 20, 2024

As you know, the University of Pretoria's Hatfield campus is currently experiencing disruptions due to an ongoing strike by workers from NEHAWU and UPWO, leading to the illegal obstruction of entrances. In response to these challenges, University management has made the difficult decision to temporarily move some classes online.

This decision affects classes usually presented at the Hatfield campus and by faculties based there. Detailed information will be provided to students regarding this transition via ClickUP.

I kindly request that lectures continue at the regularly scheduled class time. Lecturers should schedule live online collaborate sessions through your clickUP module to facilitate virtual classroom engagement. Please record these online sessions and make them available for later viewing by students who missed them

Additionally, I would like to inform all staff members that the university recognises the impact this situation may have on your ability to work on campus. For business continuity purposes, if you cannot enter campus due to the strike action and can perform your duties remotely, I encourage you to discuss this possibility with your line managers. We understand the importance of flexibility during these challenging times and will work with you to find the most suitable arrangements. Please ensure that the requisite leave applications are completed on the system as this is vital to ensure your continued insurance cover.

For any staff members required to come to campus, please be assured that the Hatfield campus will remain open and that we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure your safety and well-being.

The university remains committed to finding a speedy solution to the current situation and appeals to striking workers to act within the confines of the law.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this situation together.

Please continue monitoring your email and official communication channels for further updates.
