“This process is more than just administrative – it’s a commitment to fostering an environment where all student’s academic aspirations receive immediate and informed support,” says Raphuti Mathekgane, Deputy Director of the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration.
The University of Pretoria’s (UP) assisted registration process is well underway on Hillcrest campus and will continue until 16 February. All nine faculties, residences, the finance and student funding departments, international division and disability unit will support new and returning students up to honours level. This extended period allows for thoughtful decision-making for academic journeys at UP, showcasing the University’s commitment to excellence in education and student support during registration.
The purpose of this registration drive is to cater to various student needs, including those of new students who were unable to secure admission as a result of their Grade 12 final results, enquiries related to accommodation and concerns about financial support.
According to Assistant Director of Operations Michele Le Grange, since its initiation on 25 January, the registration process has progressed seamlessly into its second week. The efficiency of the registration procedures reflect a well-organised and effective system. This positive trajectory bodes well for the overall experience of students as they navigate the registration process.
Central to UP’s mission is the responsibility of strategically guiding students towards academic excellence. The University employs a systematic approach that involves meticulous ranking, comprehensive evaluation for programme eligibility and judicious placement based on qualifications, as determined by the Achievement Point Score (APS). Each student is assigned a unique identifier, a student number, thus facilitating the traceability of their academic journey. This system empowers the team at the Department of Student Affairs to promptly address any concerns that may arise. Moreover, UP prioritises proactive guidance, ensuring that students are well informed about alternative programmes in case their initial choices prove unattainable.
According to Raphuti Mathekgane, Deputy Director of the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration, this process is not just administrative but a commitment to fostering an environment where every student’s academic aspirations receive immediate and informed support.
Bearing in mind that some students may face challenges as they adjust to university life, UP recognises the importance of providing options for course changes. If after completing a semester or an entire year, a student feels that their chosen qualification is not suitable, UP will support the process of changing courses.
The University emphasises the significance of exploring career options and prospects to make informed decisions based on the APS scores from Grade 12. Prof Kebede of the University of South Africa commended UP for handling this process with ease and praised the team for their professionalism.
The registration process will continue until mid-February 2024, allowing students ample time to make well-considered decisions about their academic journey at UP.
