Dear students,
In my previous communication I announced that a Temporary Student Committee (TSC) would be established for the year 2024. The TSC will be responsible for student governance until the full election of a Student Representative Council (SRC). It is important to have a competent, constitutionally sound and legitimate structure in place to serve, support and represent the student body for the 2024 academic year.
The composition of the TSC was approved by the University Council at its meeting held on 23 November 2023. The TSC will consist of the seven ex officio members who were elected to the 2024 SRC, and five additional members from the ranks of recognised student leaders, including a number of candidates who contested portfolios in the 2023 election period.
The members of the 2024 TSC are (alphabetically according to surname):
Katlego Buda: An undergraduate student in the Faculty of Humanities who has experience in student life and community outreach, served as an ambassador for UP RAG and was a candidate for the Transformation and Student Success portfolio.
Kamva Diko: An undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education who was elected to the RAG ex officio portfolio for 2024.
Varnu Govender: Enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT, Varnu was elected to the Academics ex officio portfolio for 2024.
Conrad Grobbelaar: Enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Conrad was elected to the Residences ex officio portfolio for 2024.
Khanyisile Mahlangu: A postgraduate student in the Faculty of Humanities. Having served as SRC Member for Study Finance in 2023, Khanyi understands study finances and UP financial procedures, and can greatly assist the TSC with institutional knowledge.
Hlulani Mawila: An undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education who was elected to the ex officio portfolio for Student Sport for 2024.
Hlumelo Mjikeliso: A student in the Faculty of Law who was elected to the Residences ex officio portfolio for 2024.
Karabo Mogale: A student in the Faculty of Theology who held the SRC Societies portfolio in 2023 and garnered strong support in the 2024 elections.
Okuhle Mpepo: Registered in the Faculty of Humanities, Okuhle has served on multiple student leadership structures over several years, including as Chairperson of House Humanities.
Sicelo Ngwenya: A postgraduate student in the Faculty of Humanities who has student leadership experience on multiple levels. Sicelo has been involved in various student support and development initiatives.
Favourite Ntisane: An undergraduate student in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences who was elected to the Academics ex officio portfolio for 2024.
Nicole van der Walt: A student in the Faculty of Law who was elected to the Student Culture ex officio portfolio for 2024.
The Temporary Student Committee will be inaugurated in January 2024, undergo training, elect a Chairperson from amongst its members, and allocate portfolio duties as required. As is standard procedure, they will receive support from the Department of Student Affairs and the Student Governance Division.
I would like to congratulate each of the members on their appointment to the TSC and thank them for their willingness to serve the student body.
Sincerely,
Prof N. Themba Mosia
Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal
