The suspension of the SRC election results as announced by the IEC

Posted on September 27, 2023

The University of Pretoria acknowledges the recent announcement of election results by the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) for the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections. We appreciate the engagement and participation of our student body in this important democratic process.

In accordance with the statutory provisions governing the University of Pretoria, Clause 59 (8) of the Amended UP Institutional Statute, we wish to clarify that all student governance processes are subordinate to the Higher Education Act, University Statute and Institutional rules.

Furthermore, the University takes note of the report presented by the Independent Monitoring Body (IMB) which confirms the elections were free and fair. However, the IMB has referred eight candidates to the disciplinary process for alleged contravention of the election rules and these disciplinary processes have not yet been concluded. Any allegations against individual candidates will be addressed in accordance with the University's policies.

Therefore, the University hereby announces the suspension of the results of the SRC election pending the outcome of disciplinary hearings. It is imperative to emphasise that these disciplinary proceedings cannot be pre-empted by the University's management. We are committed to upholding the principles of justice and fairness in all aspects of student governance.

The final results can only be released after the proper processes have been followed and then final allocation of the portfolios will be made. We regret the delay but our goal is to ensure the democratic election of responsible student representatives who will effectively serve the interests of the student body.

In the interim, the current UP SRC will continue to fulfil its responsibilities until the end of its term in December 2023. The inauguration of the new SRC will take place before the end of October 2023. The new SRC’s term will commence in January 2024.

It is important to clarify that the University’s decision was in no way influenced by external pressure, from any organisation.

Furthermore, the University strongly cautions against any acts of intimidation, violence, or the dissemination of false information. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct, and we will take appropriate action against anyone found in breach of the institution's policies and code of ethics. Your cooperation in maintaining a peaceful and respectful environment is essential as we navigate through these important processes.

The University of Pretoria is committed to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and fairness in all its processes.
