In compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the University of Pretoria continuously monitors on-duty incidents and injuries and reports on this matter to the relevant structures, as prescribed by the Act.
Several incidents/injuries involving pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and vehicles have been brought to our attention recently. Staff, students and contractors should please take note of the following:
- Normal traffic rules apply to all persons using roads on the University’s campuses. Cyclists and motorcyclists are also requested to make sure that they comply with the traffic rules by using the roads safely.
- Each vehicle should occupy only one parking bay; no vehicle is allowed to occupy more than one bay, except for emergency vehicles.
- The speed limit on the campuses is 35km/h.
- Pedestrians are requested to look where they are going and to remain alert to their surroundings by preferably not using earphones or talking on their cellphones while walking.
- When crossing the road, pedestrians must use the zebra crossings around the campuses.
- Cyclists are requested to look out for pedestrians on the routes between buildings where vehicles are not allowed.
- Please use the parking spaces and bicycle racks allocated for motorcycles and bicycles.
- Motorcycle access to the campus is restricted to vehicle routes. Motorcycles are not allowed on pedestrian routes.
- Please refrain from parking or locking bicycles near lamp posts, general balustrades, or handrails, as this could obstruct pedestrian pathways, impede wheelchair access, and pose potential obstacles for individuals with visual impairments or during emergency evacuations.
- Golf carts should, as far as possible, be used only on the ring roads and should use pedestrian routes only to gain access to buildings.
- Skateboarders are urged to maintain situational awareness, watch their path, and be vigilant of their environment, taking care to watch for pedestrians and vehicles.
- Parking spaces designated for individuals with physical disabilities or mobility impairments must not be abused or misused.
Your cooperation will be much appreciated.
