The people of South Africa originate from a variety of countries, continents and environments and have brought with them a range of fascinating customs and beliefs. For decades under the apartheid government many of the cultural activities practised by majority of South Africa’s population were ignored or suppressed, or active steps were taken to eradicate them completely. More recently with the growing demand by both foreign and local tourist for experiences of a cultural nature, cultural tourism has become a major growth point in South Africa and today with its nine provinces and eleven official languages, South Africa provides a feast of cultural experiences for even the jaded traveller.
