Tips: How to save electricity

Posted on August 11, 2023

The University of Pretoria’s staff, students and contractors’ community must be energy-efficient and smart about power. Collectively, the small things we do every day add up to a big impact. Here are a few ways you can help the University save energy as a staff member or student:

COMPUTERS / WORKSTATIONS

  • Turn off monitors and computers at the plug when you leave – don’t leave them on standby.
  • Optimise the brightness of your monitors.
  • Activate power-saving settings on your computers and laptops.
  • Use the hibernation feature on your computers

OFFICE

  • Instead of switching on the lights, use natural light from windows and skylights if possible.
  • Don't leave lights on in unoccupied rooms – and make sure everyone shares the responsibility for this.
  • Control your heating and cooling.
  • If a room feels cold, check windows are closed before reaching for the heating controls
  • Dress for the season to reduce your reliance on air conditioning.
  • Keep the thermostat between 20-23°c.
  • Switch off air conditioning when you leave your office and remember to switch it off when you go home.
  • Switch off the lights and ensure air conditioning is turned off in meeting rooms when people leave
  • Don’t fill the kettle to full capacity if you only need water for one cup.
  • Print only when necessary.
  • Ensure communal equipment is turned off at the end of the day
  • Use the stairs
