"Start with a disire to succeed," says landscaping manager Mmakgatla Masango in the Department of Facilities Management. She tells us more about her role and offers female colleagues some inspiration.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I worked at Servest Landscaping for five years, and in 2016, I joined the landscaping section of UP’s Facilities Management Department as a team leader. We make UP’s garden more attractive by altering the existing design, adding ornamental features, and planting flowers, trees and shrubs.

Why is landscaping important?

Landscaping is important for humans as it helps in every part of their daily routine, whether it means creating a fresh space or a peaceful space. Landscaping creates a human-friendly environment. It brings us into harmony with nature, adds to the value of an institution and helps with better productivity. It provides an environment where people are free from the stress and anxiety of daily life.

Why did you choose this career?

There are many reasons. Clean air increases exposure to sunlight and balances the environment; increased productivity can be used to control environmental factors. It also reduces stress and provides ease of maintenance and decreased greenhouse gases within different types of landscaping. By filling a garden with plants that fit our taste, we can become creative. Just like the way we want to dress, decorate and live in our own garden.

Landscaping is generally a male-dominated career. What is your take on this?

While it’s been traditionally male-dominated, the lawn care and landscaping industry is evolving and beginning to include more women than ever before.

What type of team leader are you?

I would describe my leadership style as direct, and I lead by example. I enjoy delegating tasks and taking the lead on projects, but I also like to stay involved and inspire my team by showing that I’m being hands-on to help them.

Do you think women have less leisure time and why?

Women may have less time for leisure than men because they spend more time doing unpaid work, such as household chores and childcare.

Do you have a word of encouragement for female colleagues?

Be yourself, stay positive and strong. With your intelligence and purity, you can conquer the world. If you want to succeed in life, start with a desire to succeed; this will guide you in the right direction. Always be ready!
