The Erasmus Mobility Programme gives students the chance to spend an integrated period of study of between three and 12 months in another participating country. University of Pretoria (UP) students who made use of the opportunity share their experiences in Europe.
Mancoba Knowledge Mndzebele (Portugal)
“The Erasmus Mobility Programme stretched my knowledge and exposure to the field of economics. My objective of understanding economics from a global perspective was satisfactorily fulfilled. Not only were the professors welcoming and understanding, but the courses were rich and covered a wide range of topics. Moreover, even though the language of communication was Portuguese, the directors of the PhD programme ensured that the courses were delivered in English. This was a solid demonstration of inclusivity and openness to cultural and ethnical diversity.
“The experience in Portugal was marvellous. I did not hold back in exploring nearby places and appreciating the landscape of the country, both inland and in coastal areas. Encountering students from across Europe made it a sublime experience, as I was not confined to Portuguese, but had a taste of a wide range of cultures (Italian, Spanish, Luxemburgish, Slovakian, German, Brazilian, etc).
“Overall, the programme is a phenomenal initiative to expose students to the world. It sharpens one's acumen and teaches one to integrate in a multicultural environment. My wish is for more Africans to experience the programme in Europe.”
Itumeleng Baloyi (Italy)
“I had the privilege of travelling to the University of Bologna in Italy to complete part of my PhD studies. My experience in Bologna was overwhelming, eye-opening and remarkable, both on a personal and an academic level. Staying in Bologna had its challenges in terms of securing accommodation and the language barrier, but participating in this programme was the best decision I made. It has assisted me in understanding different cultures, beliefs and practices within different countries.
“During my stay in Bologna, I was able to form a network and collaborate with my host supervisor. I acquired skills and techniques that I am now able to transfer to other postgraduate students. This collaboration has played a significant role in my professional career.
“Italy, specifically Bologna, is an old university city with the most beautiful historic buildings. It is a lovely place that is full of students from different spheres across the world. Bologna has beautiful churches and monuments and is mostly famous for its food such as tortellini and mortadella. Even though it is a native Italian country, I was still able to build friendships, learn a little bit of the language and explore different cities such as Venice, Rimini and Florence. There may have been a language barrier, but communication goes far beyond language. Bolognese people are warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is peaceful.
“I am thankful to the University of Bologna and UP for the opportunity to travel, learn and advance my skills and myself. I believe this is a good opportunity for any other students who would like to gain skills, knowledge and experience in other countries.”
