The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

The Religious Right in Southern Africa by Paul Gifford.

This book examines an important religious phenomenon in Southern Africa—the spread of particular kind of Christianity. To understand this phenomenon, one must begin in the USA where this kind of Christianity originates. Christians are not a homogeneous group. They represent the whole spectrum of the society from which they have come. Southern Africa is a region that has endured the scourge of racism. It now requires further scrutiny as the religious divide becomes more pronounced with the advent of sects referred to as the religious right. Though not exclusively Protestant, they come by and large from the fundamentalist streams of the church.
