“Persevering builds your resilience and strengthens your willpower – that’s why I’ve worked at UP for 30 years,” says general assistant Albert Maluleka, who tells Tukkievaria about his long career at UP.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Valdezia in Limpopo, and was raised in the Evangelist Presbyterian Church of South Africa. I was grateful to grow up under religious leadership, as it has the power to raise awareness and influence attitudes, behaviours and practices. It shapes social values in line with faith-based teachings and maintains peace in the community.

Tell us about your career history at UP

I’ve been at UP for the past 30 years. I started working here when I was 25 years old. I worked in several departments, including residences at Maroela and Magrietjie in the catering department. I then joined the Facilities Department, formerly known as Personeel Dienswerkers, where I handled deliveries and stocktaking. Then I worked at the Prospective Students unit, distributing brochures to various departments and the Client Service Centre, which was renamed the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration, which is where I am currently working.

What attracted you to UP?

One of the main reasons I stayed at UP for so long is because of the stable working environment that it provides its employees with. I’ve enjoyed working at UP because of the positive working relationships that I have built with managers and colleagues. Some of the tips that I can share with colleagues for keeping a job for decades is to find a company that values its employees; always keep learning; be open to new ideas; and become the person your department can’t function without.

What does your day-to-day role entail?

I’m responsible for the delivery of important documents between various departments within UP; this includes the VC’s office, the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration, procurement, Human Resources, student finances and creditors.

What do you enjoy most about your job and why?

I like the fact that I have worked for the same institution for a long time, and understand exactly what to do on a daily basis and what is expected of me. By being loyal to your profession and giving your best to the organisation for years on end, you establish your standing as a worthy employee. This sort of image pays off in the long run because it sets you on a path of trust, dependability and a career of unprecedented growth.

What do you do in your free time?

I enjoy football games with my three sons.
