First Payment – Assistance for 2023

Posted on December 07, 2022

The University of Pretoria cares about all our students. We know that studying at a university comes with a host of expenses for you and your family. We know that your education is a priority to you, and that’s why we’re trying to help students by making every rand go further for you and your family.

We have not increased the first payment, which is generally due at registration each year and forms part of the annual tuition fee, since 2016. This was done to assist students who have been experiencing financial difficulties. The increase was further delayed in 2020, 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic hardship experienced by students.

To ensure the University’s financial sustainability, the first payment will be R7 500 (2022: R5 000) for undergraduate students and R10 000 (2022: R7 500) for postgraduate students from 2023. International undergraduate students will be required to pay R40 000 whilst international postgraduate students are required to pay 50% of the total 2023 fee.

It is important to note that the first payment forms part the total fee payable and is NOT in addition to the fee.

Students who are not able to afford the increased amount of R2 500 should only apply if the following criteria are met:

  1. Students who are undergraduate South African/SADC students; and
  2. Students whose household income is less than R600 000 per annum

Students must complete and submit the UP online application form which can be found on the UP Student Portal (click on the Student Centre tile then click the FinAid/Funding Opportunities tile then click on the Apply for Financial Aid button). The online application process opened on 28 November 2022. The assistance is to help students with the timing of payments, and those who qualify will have to repay the amount when they make their second payment

Students who are funded by NSFAS and those who are funded by external sponsors are not required to make the first payment.

Your application may also be considered for other forms of financial assistance which may become available during the year. The University has several support measures in place to assist students who experience financial difficulties, and we will do everything we can to help them. We aim to ensure that no academically deserving student is left behind.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Naeem Moolla
