The security of our staff and students is vital

Posted on September 13, 2022

Dear UP community,

In the early hours of Saturday morning, 10 September 2022, a student was shot and killed in Hatfield, close to the Tuksdorp residence. The suspect was arrested by the police, who worked closely with UP Campus Security and members of the Hatfield City Improvement District (CID), who were immediately on the scene.

We are saddened and shocked by this horrendous incident and remind students again to make use of the Green Route, which is an initiative launched by the university in its attempt to provide and maintain a secure work and study environment for staff and students. The Route ensures the safety and security of students and staff members by availing a security officer to escort people to and from their residences and vehicles, or any nearby places, between 18:00 to 06:00. Any security officer (clothed in uniform) can be approached and a request can be made for an escort.

In addition, we would like to remind you of a few safety tips:

  • Avoid walking alone at night.
  • Walk in groups and avoid deserted streets and places. There’s safety in numbers; ask your friends to walk with you especially if it's dark.
  • Don’t stop to speak to strangers, especially when walking alone. Don’t stop to even give directions or for anyone wanting to "pray for you” or “seeking your help.”
  • Be observant when walking in public or on campus. Don’t get lost in your music or wander aimlessly. Try not to use your cell phone while walking, focus on the road ahead.
  • Be alert and observant of your surroundings as you move around. Try to always walk facing oncoming traffic, and pay attention to any cars doing U-turns or circling too close to you.
  • Don't use your cell phone while walking. Keep your cell phones, tablets, laptops and other valuables away from sight (in your bag).

Any additional Security Services requests can be made with the 24-hour Operational Management Centre by dialing the emergency numbers displayed at the back of your access card. They are 0124202310 or 0124202760 or 0836540476 or 0800747747.
