Why is it important to celebrate Mandela Day - Prof Thula Simpson, associate professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at UP

Posted on July 15, 2022

Since 2010, the world has been celebrating Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela every year on 18 July, on the day known as Nelson Mandela Day. Police brutality towards black minorities is a current problem which even affects developed countries such as the United States. Professor Thula Simpson, associate professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at UP caught up with Tukkievaria and unpacked the importance of Mandela Day.

1.Why is it important to celebrate Mandela Day?

It is important to celebrate Mandela Day because it commemorates the birthday of Nelson Mandela, probably the leading South African of the 20th century and the founding father of South African democracy.

2. The theme of Mandela Day 2022 is "take action, inspire change and make everyday a Mandela Day.” How can this be done?

At various stages of his life, Mandela led from the front in inspiring prominent changes in South African life, from his role as the founder of Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961, to overseeing the historic compromises that made the negotiated settlement of the 1990s possible. It is the capacity to lead and make tough decisions that marks him out as such an important figure in our history. That leadership is sorely lacking in the present day.

3. How did Madiba change the world, or what positive impact did his “Madiba magic” make?

Mandela is an icon who in the mid-1990s briefly offered South Africa a model of internal reconciliation and external engagement that inspired levels of confidence in the country that have not been matched since.

4. What are some of the relevant aspects that leaders (in any sphere) may emulate from Madiba leadership style?

There is a need for leaders to lead, which involves taking touch decisions on fundamental questions. Mandela was in many ways an autocratic leader, but he was willing to stand by his decisions.

5. What is the significance of 67 minutes on Mandela Day?

It marks the 67 years that Mandela served as a public servant.
