Dear UP student,
The University of Pretoria has not increased the first payment, which is generally due at registration each year and which forms part of the annual tuition fee, since 2016. This was done to assist students who have been experiencing financial difficulties. The increase was further delayed in 2020, 2021 and 2022 owing to the pandemic and the economic hardships experienced by students.
In 2023, the first payment for undergraduate students will increase to R7 500 (from R5 000) and for postgraduate students the fee will increase to R10 000 (from R7 500).
International undergraduate students will be required to pay R40 000 as a first payment, while international postgraduate students will be required to pay 50% of the total 2023 fee.
The first payment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students will increase to R10 000 for undergraduate students and R12 500 for postgraduate students in 2024. Thereafter all increases will be limited to the allowed annual tuition fee increase, taking into account the impact of the consumer price index increase with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
It is important to note that the first payment forms part of the total annual fee payable and is not in addition to the annual fee.
Students who are funded by NSFAS and those who are funded by external sponsors are not required to make the first payment. Students who cannot afford to make the payment must apply for NSFAS or should approach the University for financial assistance.
The second payment of 50% of the total annual student account is due by 30 April and the final payment by 31 July.
A 2.5% discount will apply to all payments made before 30 April. This discount will be processed directly on the relevant student’s account.
Kind regards,
Mr Naeem Moolla
