Construction industry roadmap assists the Botswana’s economic growth

Posted on June 16, 2022

The University of Pretoria’s campus entity, Enterprises UP, was recently involved in a research and advisory activity that contributed to the development of a construction industry roadmap to support Botswana's economic growth. This initiative was launched by the government of the Republic of Botswana to upskill and develop that country’s construction industry. The objective was to create a sustainable domestic construction industry that can compete internationally and execute projects efficiently and effectively.

Based on its ability to provide professional solutions to industry using scientific evidence, Enterprises UP won a World Bank tender to assist the Botswana government to improve the performance of its construction industry. The project involved assessing the country’s current skills and identifying challenges faced by the construction sector (such as civil works). The consulting team then prepared and implemented identified training initiatives, and made recommendations to improve the industry. This initiative would serve as the foundation for the industry’s growth and performance.

Drawing on the expertise of several disciplines within the University’s nine faculties, Enterprises UP was able to deploy multi-faceted teams to provide the government of the Republic of Botswana with a customised and innovative solution. The project entailed research, stakeholder engagement workshops, and the implementation of a training plan.

After an industry analysis had been conducted, a plan of action was developed for the local construction sector. Members of the construction industry, consultants and government officials then completed several short courses at Enterprises UP, covering 10 topics that included project management, procurement and tendering procedures, financial management for contractors and safe road design. The project report will form the basis for the industry's growth and performance.

According to Orapeleng Mosigi, Director of Transport Policy and Planning in Botswana’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, the project will enable the construction industry to meet Botswana’s current and future needs, contributing to economic growth. Forging ahead, it is critical that government officials, contractors and consultants work together to execute high-quality construction projects.

This research clearly demonstrates the critical role that the construction industry plays in economic development and job creation, as well as the importance of an industry that embraces innovation and technological improvement to remain competitive in the global market.
