Dear UP community,

It is with heavy hearts that as the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP), we announce the passing of Prof Robin J Green on 27 May 2022. He was the Head of our School of Medicine. He was also the Director of Paediatric Services at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Pretoria. 

He was a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health within the School of Medicine at UP where he also served as its Chairperson.

Prof Green held a PhD and DSc and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Chest Physicians. He matriculated from Parktown Boys High, Johannesburg and graduated from the Wits Medical School with a PhD in Medicine.

He was the Past President of the College of Paediatricians of South Africa and Immediate Past Chairman of the Allergy Society of South Africa. The National Research Foundation of South Africa rated him as an established researcher, specializing in Paediatric Pulmonology.

Prof Green published 160 peer-reviewed scientific publications, edited five books, wrote 10 chapters and gave over 300 national and international lectures. Among others, he was on the editorial board of  the publication, Infectious Diseases and the African Journal of Thoracic and Critical Care Medicine, of the Thoracic Society of South Africa. This society is dedicated to the promotion of lung health in South Africa and Africa, through advocacy, research, education and training. The highly cited academic was well known in paediatric circles and was revered as an expert in his field.

Our heartfelt condolences go to the family of Prof Green, the Faculty, School of Medicine, the Paediatrics fraternity and friends.
