FEATURING - The Archaeological Sites of Greefswald by A. Meyer

Posted on May 30, 2022

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

The Archaeological Sites of Greefswald by A. Meyer

In 1968, a third programme of investigations into the archaeological sites on the farm of Greefswald—which included Mapungubwe Hill—was initiated. The bulk of the fieldwork was undertaken by Professor Andrie Meyer and this book is the result of that expertly conducted fieldwork. This work presents a clear picture of the sequence of events: stratigraphy, chronology, the character of the settlements, and the way in which the various sites within the complex are related. For the first time, Mapungubwe could be integrated into the wider story of early Bantu society in southern Africa. ‘The Archaeological Sites of Greefswald’ initiated a new age of discovery, and provided a sound foundation for future work, at the site. It is an essential volume for any serious student of the southern African Iron Age and the archaeological sites related to Mapungubwe.
