Think before you click or share

Sometimes when we enjoy the safety obtained through managing our risks well, we become complacent. Now and then, we skip the necessary precautions and are no longer as alert as we had been. In our last communication during this Cybersecurity Month, we wish to warn you against this phenomenon.

There is a saying that knowledge is power. Knowing that your actions on the internet are not private by default and acting accordingly gives you the power to reveal only what is necessary and to your benefit. However, it requires that you keep on day after day to apply the principle to pause for a moment to think before you click a link or share private information or opinions even when you are angry, excited, tired or irritated.

Part of pausing before clicking a link or submitting information involves taking the time to check whether a website is what it pretends to be and whether it is secure while at the same time being on the alert for danger signs.

Visit the Information and Cybersecurity pages at https://www.up.ac.za/itsecurity to read more about maintaining your privacy and security. The site can also be reached via the UP Mobile App from the Cybersecurity icon available under General Information.

Please let us know at [email protected] whether you have found the content shared during this campaign of value and if you have any suggestions for future campaigns.
