The Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP) is exulted to announce that the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 by subject: law’ institution has ranked UP Law 60th in the world for law.  Not only is this ranking a radical improvement from the 2021 ranking, but a confirmation that for the fifth year in a row, UP Law remains the leading law faculty on the Africa continent.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 include more than 1 600 universities across 99 countries and territories, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.

Rankings are based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

According to THE’s website, their ‘rich data have become a vital resource for students, helping them to make one of the most important decisions of their lives – who to trust with their education.  The rankings are also widely used by faculty to inform career decisions, by university leaders to help set strategic priorities and by governments to help monitor policy.  Their rationale for this statement is ‘because the THE rankings are based on one of the richest databases of university performance in the world.’

An elated Dean Professor Elsabe Schoeman and Deputy Dean Charles Maimela made the announcement in the faculty this afternoon.  Schoeman says that ‘UP Law’s continuous THE ranking as the top law faculty in Africa bears proof of the excellent quality and commitment of staff, students, and alumni, and despite the huge impact of Covid since March 2020 to date. And true to its vision and mission, the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria continuously strives to improve its international recognition as a leader through relevant legal research, education, academic cross-pollination and collaboration.
