The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

A journal of a voyage to & from the Cape of Good Hope, with some sketches of the interior etc of that colony by Robert Henry Dingley.

The handwritten journal of Ensign Robert Henry Dingley is a lively and often humorous account of his observations during his travels and includes illustrations by Dingley himself. The British took control of the Cape in 1806, and Dingley arrived in the colony shortly afterwards. His regiment was deployed to the Eastern frontier, an area disputed by the Xhosa and colonial farmers, during the Fourth and Fifth frontier wars. His drawings give researchers an early, first-hand record of the inhabitants and structures of the area.
