Posted on September 20, 2020

The University of Pretoria (UP) is proud to announce that Professor André Boraine, former Dean of the Faculty of Law and currently in its Department of Private Law, has been recognised for his insolvency law and restructuring expertise in The 2020 LawDragon 500 Leading Global Restructuring & Insolvency Lawyers list.

The fields of insolvency law, restructuring, business rescue, and insolvency law reforms and tools took centre stage during this unprecedented time amid COVID-19. This global recognition, published on 4 August 2020 by LawDragon magazine, recognises lawyers who were “selected from intensive journalistic research into the lawyers handling the biggest restructurings globally, intersected with professional leadership and respect of their peers”. According to data reflected by LawDragon, only one other lawyer from South Africa has ever been recognised in their top 500 list.

“Hearty congratulations, André!” said Dean Elsabe Schoeman. “UP Law is very proud of this achievement, your lifetime of work and dedication to improving the field of insolvency law worldwide. Thank you for keeping UP Law on the global map!”

Prof Boraine is the author of a number of books on the topic, and was involved in the compilation of technical reports. These include the Report on the Reform of Administration Orders in terms of s 74 of the Magistrates Courts Act, submitted to the Department of Justice, the South African Law Commission and the South African Law Society (2002); the World Bank First Draft Report on South African Creditors Rights and Insolvency Law – World Bank ROSC assessment of South African Insolvency Law (2011) (Consultant to the World Bank); and the World Bank Report on Namibian Creditors Rights and Insolvency Law – World Bank ROSC assessment of Namibian Insolvency Law (2013) (Member of the World Bank Task Team). He also peer-reviewed the report of the World Bank Draft Report on Zimbabwean Creditors Rights and Insolvency Law – World Bank ROSC assessment of Zimbabwean Insolvency Law (2015).

Prof Boraine is a member of several professional bodies, such as the Legal Practice Council of South Africa; an honorary member of the South African Association for Rescue and Insolvency Practitioners (SARIPA); Insol International; the International Insolvency Institute (III); and the Association for the International Exchange of Experiences on Insolvency Law (IEEI). He also serves on the editorial board of the International Insolvency Review and the editorial advisory board of the Nottingham Insolvency and Business Law Journal. He holds a B2-rated National Research Foundation rating.
