Posted on August 03, 2020

The University of Pretoria (UP) Alumni Relations Office recently hosted a post-budget debate as part of its LeadUP Alumni Thought Leadership series. The debate was led by a panel of experts that evaluated the condition of South Africa’s economy and analysed the contents of the Special Adjustment Budget (the “emergency COVID-19 relief budget”) delivered by Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni on Wednesday 24 June.

The panel included Dr Morris Mthombeni, Interim Dean: Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS); Adrian Saville, Professor: GIBS; Dr Thabi Leoka, Economist; Mr Duma Gqubule, Director: Centre for Economic Development and Transformation; Andile Khumalo Chartered Accountant (SA), Investor and Entrepreneur; and Dr Petrus de Kock, General Manager for Research: Brand South Africa.

The event was well-received, and many individuals undoubtedly learnt a great deal about how the key interventions announced by the Minister to help boost the economy and manage the country’s sovereign debt will affect both individuals and businesses alike. Watch the full debate here

Other topics debated as part of the LeadUP Alumni Thought Leadership series include turnaround strategies and business rescue for struggling businesses; learning and thriving during the global lockdown and navigating career strategies in today’s job market and Global lockdowns: Learning, thriving… or just surviving!
