Message to students regarding graduation ceremonies

Posted on March 19, 2020

Recognising the importance of the graduation ceremonies not only to the University but also to the graduates and their families, the University of Pretoria (UP) management has heard the concerns raised by students regarding the cancellation of graduation ceremonies. In line with the recently introduced government regulations and in consultation with health experts, the scheduled graduation ceremonies which were planned to take place from 7 April to 8 May 2020 cannot proceed at this time.

In order to ensure that those who would have graduated at the Autumn graduation ceremonies can receive their certificates and academic records as soon as possible in order to proceed with their further studies and enjoyment of the rights and privileges associated with their qualification(s), the University has decided that it will proceed with both an online ceremony (which may be viewed via live-streaming) during which degrees, diplomas and certificates will be conferred. And, once it is safe to proceed, the University will invite these graduates to graduation ceremonies over which the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Principal or a deputy Vice-Principal will preside. This means we will have both an online and traditional graduation ceremony for our graduates.

Loved ones can attend the traditional graduation ceremonies and witness the graduates crossing the stage in their full academic dress and graduation photographs will be taken.

Details of these ceremonies will be communicated later in the year.

Kind regards,

Prof Tawana Kupe

Vice-Chancellor and Principal
