The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Humanities 100: 1919 - 2019 by Bronwyn Strydom and UP Archives.

Humanities 100 is a commemorative publication, tracing the history of various facets of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria over the past century. It is not a comprehensive history of the Faculty, but a kaleidoscope of selected vignettes, tracing the first hundred years of the Faculty’s existence. This history attempts to bring together broader themes and trends, which were part of the Faculty’s origin, growth and development over this period.

It is also a celebration of change, growth and renewal highlighting the dynamic nature of the Faculty. This overview of the Faculty’s history has also shown it to be a very responsive institution. The manner in which the Faculty has adapted and reimagined itself over the course of a century of South African history which was fraught with controversy and change, can be seen in the shifting priorities and focus points of the Faculty.
