FEATURING - The Concentration Camps of the Anglo-Boer War: a Social History by Elizabeth van Heyningen.

Posted on January 27, 2020

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

The Concentration Camps of the Anglo-Boer War: a Social History by Elizabeth van Heyningen.

The deaths of many thousands of people, especially women and children, in the concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War form one of South Africa’s national tragedies. This is the first general history of the camps in over fifty years, and the first to use in depth the very rich and extensive official documents in the South African and British archives. Written as a social history, it provides fascinating insights into Boer and African society of the time, the life of the inmates in the camps, and the ethos and practices of the British staff.
