The University of Pretoria is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Deon Meiring, a well-respected colleague in the Department of Human Resource Management, who passed away on Friday, 4 October 2019.
Prof Meiring was a Professor in the Department of Human Resource Management in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria.  Apart from his extensive list of publications, his reputation extended beyond the borders of South Africa and his academic presence had a tangible impact on the industry as well as on his colleagues in both the local and international arenas. He taught Psychometrics and Advanced Assessment to third-year and master’s students and enriched the modules using his expertise related to the cross-cultural implications of assessment centre practices in South Africa.
Prof Meiring played an active role in various societies and professional bodies both nationally and internationally. He was the recipient of 14 competitive, peer-reviewed grants for various national and international research projects. In 2010, he received the prize for his contribution to the field of Assessment Centres in South Africa and in 2016, he won the Presidential Award from SIOPSA for his contribution to the field of industrial psychology in South Africa.  In March 2018, he received special recognition for his significant scientific and professional contributions to the Assessment Centre practices in South Africa. Prof Meiring’s career success was attributed to his passion for cross-cultural psychology and assessment practices, as well as his unwavering commitment towards enhancing the field of industrial psychology nationally and internationally.
Prof Meiring leaves behind a rich legacy as a notable researcher in his field as well as a lecturer who had the best interests of his students at heart. His presence and his caring nature will be sorely missed. Prof Meiring encompassed the true essence of academic citizenship through his unwavering loyalty and assistance towards the profession of IOP, his students and his peers. His notable devotion will leave a huge gap in the profession of IOP, but he laid a solid foundation that we can build on in the future.
Our sincerest condolences go to his wife Ilse, his daughters Chloe and Kylie, and all his colleagues in the Department of Human Resource Management. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
