The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
Directory of South African Heritage Institutions v1 by National Heritage Council of South Africa.
The South African democratic government inherited a highly fragmented heritage sector that was not only saddled with skewed racial representation on the heritage landscape but also poor coordination of the sector. One of the most important policy interventions by the government was passing of the National Heritage Council Act 11 of 1999, which led to the launch of the National Heritage Council (NHC) in February 2004. The publication of this heritage directory, the first of its kind in the country, was aimed at consolidating the NHC’s work in integrating and coordinating the sector. The directory is an invaluable resource for the practitioners in the sector, government departments at all levels, civil society, researchers and scholars.
