Announcement: Further call for nominations and notice of election of President of the Convocation of the University of Pretoria

In accordance with the provisions of the Statute and the approved Institutional Rules of the University of Pretoria, Convocation members are invited to nominate suitable candidates to fill the vacant position of President of the Convocation for a five-year term.

The elected President will sit on the Council of the University and be Chairperson of the Convocation Advisory Board (ex officio).

The University of Pretoria plays an important role nationally and makes a significant contribution to South Africa’s international standing. Council is the University’s governing body. It has a fiduciary duty and is responsible for determining the University’s strategic direction. The Convocation Advisory Board will function as an advisory body to the University and the Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

In view of the importance of the role of the President of the Convocation, the University Executive has exercised its prerogative to request a further call for nominations in order to increase the pool of candidates. Convocation members are therefore invited to nominate candidates with the requisite stature from amongst the ranks of the Convocation to fill the above-mentioned vacancy. The requirements for nomination as set out in the Institutional Rules, include that candidates –

  • May not be an employee or student of the University of Pretoria or any other higher education institution in South Africa; nor be  a member of another university’s council and/or formal alumni/convocation governance structures;
  • must be younger than 75 years of age and in good standing with the University of Pretoria;
  • may not be currently or previously insolvent/sequestrated; and
  • may not have a criminal record.

Please note that all candidates who were duly nominated during the first round of nominations, will remain part of the pool of candidates eligible for election.

The closing date for nominations is Thursday, 29 August 2019 at 16:00. The subsequent electronic voting process will commence on Monday, 7 October 2019 at 09:00 and will end on Monday, 21 October 2019 at 16:00. The results of the election will be independently audited before any announcements are made.
