FEATURING - 'Celebrating 30 years of Johnny Clegg: Spirit is the Journey'

Posted on July 22, 2019

The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Celebrating 30 years of Johnny Clegg: Spirit is the Journey.

This week we are showcasing one of the DVDs in our FZ van der Merwe South African Music collection.

This DVD is a music compilation of Johnny Clegg and his two traditional Zulu groups, Juluka and Savuka, over 30 years. It features popular songs that became hits at home and abroad, including 'Spirit is the Journey', 'The Crossing (Osiyeza)', 'Scatterlings of Africa', 'Imp’Iyeza', 'Asimbonanga' and many more.

The song ‘Asimbonanga’ (translated in English as 'we have never seen him') was written in 1986 and banned from the airwaves by the SABC. This song is about the generation that had never seen Mandela, even in pictures, as publishing the likeness of the jailed freedom fighter was illegal. This song gained more popularity after Mandela was released from prison.

We also have the album The Best of Juluka/Savuka featuring Johnny Clegg in our collection.

This DVD and CD are available at Special Collections, housed on level 5 of the Merensky 2 Library, and are part of our FZ van der Merwe (FZ) Collection.

The Special Collections unit of the Department of Library Services plays a stewardship role in the acquisition and preservation of the Library's rare and valuable information resources, making them accessible to students, staff and researchers, as well as safeguarding them for future generations.
