APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY DEAN: RESEARCH AND POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AND REAPPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY DEAN: TEACHING AND LEARNING, FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE
To all members of staff
The University of Pretoria (UP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Marinda Oosthuizen as Deputy Dean: Research and Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Veterinary Science with effect from 1 July 2019. Professor Oosthuizen is currently Professor in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD). She completed her PhD (Microbiology), MSc (Agric) (Microbiology) (Cum laude), BScHons (Agric) (Cum laude) and BSc (Agric) (Microbiology) (Cum Laude) at the University of Pretoria.
Professor Oosthuizen is internationally recognised as a leading researcher in the field of veterinary molecular parasitology. Her research is focused on tick-borne pathogen discovery, molecular characterisation of novel tick-borne haemoparasites of domestic and wild animals, and molecular diagnostic assay development.
Professor Oosthuizen has made significant contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
I would like to congratulate Professor Oosthuizen on her appointment and wish her well in her career as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science.
The University is also pleased to announce the reappointment of Professor Dietmar Holm as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Veterinary Science with effect from 1 June 2019.
Professor Holm’s first term as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning commenced in 2016. He played a significant role in addressing the overload in the BVSc curriculum, while introducing a very necessary research module, as well as content related to our African heritage.
After more than a decade of development, through Professor Holm’s intervention, the Faculty successfully introduced the new three-year degree programme in veterinary nursing in 2019. Under his leadership the Faculty also implemented a structured approach to assessment, with a particular focus on practical skills assessment through objective assessment methods, equivalent to some of the best in the world.
Professor Holm led the Faculty’s introduction of the first successful integrated day-one competency examination in the BVSc programme. He was also instrumental in improving the undergraduate selection system.
I would like to thank Professor Holm for his contributions to the University thus far and congratulate him on his re-appointment as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. I wish him well in his second term.
