Invitation: Panel discussion: Gender-Based Violence – Male Victim, Male Perpetrator

Posted on May 14, 2019

Join us as we discuss issues of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment that men go through and perpetrate. Many times, we hear of events around Gender Based Violence which bring together women in solidarity against it, but we hardly hear about events that bring men into the fold as stakeholders in dealing with the scourge of violence against women and our society at large.

Three panellists will speak from the perspective of a male victim, male perpetrator and a psychologist who specialises on men’s psyche.

Objectives:

  • Bring the lived experiences, struggles and an understanding of Male Victims of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment from women, male peers and male partners to students.

o Different ways male victims are victimized.

o Institutions of oppression against male victims.

o Violence and abuse within the queer community against male victims.

o Lived experiences of abuse against men from partners.

o Support mechanisms and structures for male victims.

  • Bring the lived experiences, psyche and behavior of Male Perpetrators against women, the queer community (i.e., corrective rape), and children.

o The influence of pornography.

o Childhood trauma

o The psyche of a rapist or perpetrator

o Support mechanisms and structures of support and rehabilitation.

  • To bring a psychological analysis of South Africa’s sexual violence culture and men’s psychological and mental analysis.

o Discuss rape culture, corrective rape and other forms of rape from men’s perspective.

  • Structures and enabling environments for the perpetuation of such violence from men.
  • How to combat it.

o Discuss ways on how to deal with the scourge of Gender Based Violence within men’s circles.
