8 simple ways to save electricity at work

Posted on April 12, 2019

Dear Colleagues

As the national power grid is under pressure, we urge all UP staff members and students to play their part in conserving electricity. While we are currently not experiencing electricity interruptions, it is imperative that we should do everything possible to avoid unnecessary consumption.

We therefore kindly request that you

  • Switch off all lights in unused areas.
  • Switch off lights in work spaces if there is sufficient natural light.
  • Switch off all lights and air-conditioning when you leave a room.
  • Switch off appliances when not in use.
  • Apply power saving mode and screen savers on laptops and PCs when left inoperative for periods of 15 minutes or more.
  • Set electronic equipment to energy-saving mode.
  • Heat and cool venues such as boardrooms and lecture halls when they are in use only.
  • Print only when necessary.

As part of its environmental responsibility and in an attempt to reduce its impact on the environment, the University recently launched several sustainability initiatives, through the #GreenUP initiative, on all its campuses and other properties. This was done to better manage resources such as water and electricity, and to reduce waste.

Every effort counts – your contribution to a sustainable and #GreenUP is appreciated.
