The award was bestowed by Minister of Science and Technology Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane. The Forum was told that Prof. De la Rey’s achievements, as well as her credibility, political astuteness and profile in defining and promoting science policy in South Africa, on the continent and globally, makes her an exceptional recipient of this award. She has demonstrated excellence and leadership in her 30 years of contribution to research development, scientific excellence, higher education, and technology and innovation. She is an advocate of and is committed to strengthening the global science and innovation system through science-driven and evidence-based policy approaches.

Science Forum South Africa serves as an open, public platform for debating the interface between science and society. Its objectives are to create a platform for a vibrant debate on the role of science, technology and innovation in society; promote international science, technology and innovation partnerships; and to create a network platform for science, technology and innovation actors, including senior government leaders, academics, scientists, industry, civil society and students.

The two-and-a-half-day programme brought together more than 2 500 participants, and the event was attended by academics, scientists, researchers, senior government leaders and students.
