The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
Fighting their own war: South African blacks and the First World War by Albert Grundlingh.
This book deals with the impact of the First World War on South African blacks. It analyses their responses to and participation in the war, and evaluates the wider ramifications of the war as these affected black people in South Africa. In this readable history, Grundlingh shows that although Africans were often caught up in events and processes beyond their control, they were nevertheless ‘fighting their own war’ trying to shape the changing social and political realities of the time, both within the military environment and in the wider society.
