The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
Ken Jacob’s Coins of South Africa: a complete reference book on South African coins, by Ken Jacobs and Eli Levine.
Much of South Africa’s history is reflected in its coinage. The first truly South African coin, the 1874 Burgers ‘Staatspond’, bore the image of Thomas Burgers, President of the old Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek from which our present Republic takes its name. The next South African coin appeared in 1892, bearing President Paul Kruger’s effigy. This same design, taken from an original Kruger coinage die, today appears on all our Krugerrands. The Krugerrands are the most eminent of all current gold coins, being bought and sold more than any other in the world.
