Mamelodi Campus Alumni Club

Posted on March 16, 2018

The Mamelodi Campus of the University of Pretoria (UP) is home to a flagship project designed to give students the best possible academic support through teaching and learning to help them excel at university.

Students on extended programmes have smaller classes and a hands-on approach to teaching and learning. Over the years, it has been proven that students who enter mainstream academic programmes from the foundation courses at the Mamelodi campus, excel in these programmes. The foundation courses at Mamelodi have a success story to tell in the form of its alumni who have gone on to achieve great things.

As a result, the University was approached by Mr Griffiths Makgareetsa to organise an alumni club. The club was established in consultation with University management and the Mamelodi campus.

The Club is constituted of members who are either still students in mainstream undergraduate or postgraduate courses or UP alumni who have completed their studies and are working. They would started their studies on the Mamelodi campus.

Speaking at the launch of the event, Prof Norman Duncan (Vice-Principal: Academic) shared the UP view on the importance of alumni by saying, ‘Alumni assist the University with student recruitment and mobilising resources; alumni contribute their time and expertise to the university as mentors. Furthermore, alumni are the best advocates and ambassadors of the University because they know how much UP contributes to the South African society through its research, teaching and community engagement.’

Prof Duncan also noted that this is also true of the alumni from the Mamelodi Campus, many of whom personify the University’s commitment to student success and excellence.
