Invitation: Information session on Asthma

Posted on October 12, 2017

The UP Corporate Wellness Programme, presented in partnership with Bestmed Medical Scheme, is pleased to inform you that we are continuing with our monthly group intervention initiative during lunch breaks, from March to October 2017. The information sessions, which will be presented by a Bestmed medical health professional, are aimed at educating staff on a variety of health-related topics and helping them to make voluntary behavioural changes that will reduce health risks and enhance their productivity and well-being. All UP employees should contribute towards building a healthier and more positive workforce.

The sixth information session will deal with asthma. Asthma is a common long-term inflammatory disease in the airways of the lungs. It is characterised by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These episodes may occur a few times a day of a few times per week. For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to physical activity. Those attending the session will gain a thorough understanding of asthma and respiratory health in general and related risk factors to be managed and have an overview of the integrative approach to managing and preventing asthma and respiratory disease, promoting health and wellbeing.

By the end of the information session, persons who attended should:

  • have a basic overview of asthma and the importance of, combined with practical information on, herbal remedies, specific breathing exercises, relaxation training, correct exercise, essential micronutrients and supplements to support the lungs and respiratory system in general;
  • will understand the emergency status of an acute asthma attack; and
  • finally grasp the relationship between lifestyle choices and asthma how the various components of a healthy lifestyle can impact on general health and well-being.
