Heritage Day is a day to celebrate the multitude of cultures, languages, religions and art forms of all South Africans. It is a time to celebrate the most unique facet of our country's history: that all our different groups work together, live together, and have a shared identity as South Africans. South Africa's coat of arms includes the motto ǃke e: ǀxarra ǁke, or unity in diversity. This reflects the vision to which South African society aspires.
It is testimony to the spirit of South Africa which is premised on respect for a diversity of views and cultures as the very basis of our co-existence.
Similarly, the University of Pretoria is a microcosm of the array of South African cultures. Our University is home to many international and continental students and staff, each of whom brings their culture, heritage, and worldview to our doors daily. UP has a diverse student and staff body which allows South Africans to learn about heritages and cultures from other countries. This cultural diversity allows for a confluence of cultures and thinking styles which makes for a richer experience for everybody. This, in turn, enhances and enables learning, understanding and growth.
This Heritage Day, let us appreciate and celebrate our diverse heritages and cultures that make us uniquely South African.
