How safe is the food on your plate?

A new feature has been published on the Research Matters website.

This time the focus is on the work by a team of researchers led by Prof Lise Korsten, who leads the food safety research programme at the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, which is co-hosted by UP and the University of the Western Cape. Broad questions that the team is investigating include how regulators ensure that fruit and vegetables are free of potentially harmful pesticides, other agricultural chemicals and human and plant pathogens; how farmers can prevent contamination and reduce losses due to polluted water or human error; and, whether fresh produce from formal markets like retail stores are safer than fresh produce bought from informal traders.

Visit www.researchmatters.up.ac.za to see all the related videos, infographics and research-related articles showcasing UP research and innovation. Please share this information widely on your own social media networks and other channels.

The Research Matters Programmes page comprises various articles demonstrating how UP staff and students are making their research matter.

Should you want to make a contribution or inform us about a project that you feel should be featured on Research Matters, please send an email to [email protected] or [email protected]. We will ensure that your work is scheduled for upcoming features and we are looking forward to hearing from you.

Kindly note that we will also be running media training workshops for academics who want to interact with the popular media on their research in the future. If you are interested please let us know so that we can inform you of upcoming sessions.

Kind regards

The Research Matters Team
