The UP Corporate Wellness Programme, presented in partnership with the Bestmed Medical Scheme, continues with the organising of support groups to contribute towards improving the health and wellbeing of all UP employees through education and stimulating activities that support positive lifestyle changes.
The group exercise interventions we already present, such as pilates and fitness support, are designed to get participants to engage in fitness activities in groups, which is usually more beneficial to a person's health than working alone. The aims of this initiative are to motivate employees to start exercising, to create awareness of individual fitness and to build a community of like-minded individuals.
Following the introduction of the first fitness support group in May, the second support group titled 'How to train for my first 10 km' will be introduced in August 2017. This support group is available to all UP employees who want to adopt a more active lifestyle and will enable them to incorporate fitness activities into their daily lives and to challenge themselves to complete a 10 km race either by walking or jogging.
The fitness support group will be led by a Bestmed biokineticist and an attendance register will be kept. Please note that participation is voluntary.
Join our 'How to train for my first 10 km' support group by attending the information session on 18 August 2017 at 12:30 in Lecture Hall 2-2.7, Natural Sciences 1 Building, Hatfield Campus. The session will cover ways on how to train towards embarking on and finishing your first 10 km race and focus on the different steps in setting and achieving your personal goal. Exercise and training tips on stretching will be demonstrated and you will also have the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who wish to take part in this challenge. Finally, you will receive an informative booklet summarising important aspects of the session.
Further information can be obtained from the UP Wellness Coordinator, Stembiso Magagula, on 012 420 2870, or by sending an email to [email protected]. Please direct all enquiries to him only.
