Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu re-elected as Chancellor of University of Pretoria

Professor Lumkile Wiseman Nkuhlu was unanimously re-elected Chancellor of the University of Pretoria (UP) by the University's Electoral College on 28 June. This appointment is for a period of five years, until 30 June 2022. Prof Nkuhlu has served as UP's Chancellor since 2006.

He has over 30 years' experience in executive leadership of major organisations, including universities, professional organisations and an international agency, working with leadership at the highest level in both the public and private sectors. He was the first Chairman of the Council for Higher Education and is currently a trustee of the International Financial Standards Reporting Foundation.

Prof Nkuhlu was appointed as the first Chairman of the Steering Committee and Chief Executive of the Secretariat for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) in 2001 and held this role until 2005. In this role, he led the technical development of socio-economic renewal programmes for key areas including peace and conflict resolution, trans-boundary infrastructure, health and agriculture. He also led the NEPAD discussions between Africa representatives and representatives of the G8 countries, and developed and implemented a NEPAD advocacy and communication strategy.

Prof Nkuhlu graduated from Fort Hare University in 1970 with a BCom degree, and in 1976 became South Africa's first black chartered accountant. He also holds an MBA from the University of New York. He is the subject of the biography Wiseman Nkuhlu: A life of purpose by Luvuyo Wotshela.
