A number of students from the University of Pretoria (UP) attended the annual Sustainability Week hosted by the City of Tshwane at the CSIR Convention Centre from 13–18 June 2017. The objective of the Week is to advance the Green Economy by creating platforms for African stakeholders from across all sectors to share knowledge, thought leadership, and experience, and to learn from each other.
The Greenline Student Society from UP arranged for some of their students to volunteer as workers at the conference as this was a wonderful opportunity to network with people from various companies active in the Green Economy.
On Wednesday, 14 June, four of these students also had the opportunity to attend the Eco-logic Awards 2017, which recognises contributions to the Green Economy based on the finalists' motivation and the quality of their thinking and behaviour, with a particular focus on how these positively or negatively affect the Earth.
As an added bonus, the lucky four students, Nozipho Magagula (Miss Earth South Africa 2016), Brian Ethan Nkala (Greenline UP co-founder), Courtney Gehle (Greenline UP co-founder) and Cameron Green (Greenline UP Chairperson 2016/2017), were also able to discuss issues of sustainability and the role of students in the Green Economy with the current Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Solly Msimanga. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and Cllr Msimanga took the time to thank them for all that they have done and continue to do to promote sustainability in the University environment.
