The Department of Library Services' MakerSpace and SA-RILAB, are proud to host an innovative design workshop around solutions for real world problems to develop the practical skills of students.

Date: Thursday, 25 May 2017

Time: 16:30-19:00

Venue: MakerSpace, Level 3, Merensky 2 Library, Hatfield Campus

Programme:

16:30-17:15- Welcome and presentations

17:15-18:00- Facilitation and discussion of ideas

18:00-18:20- Idea generation and solution design

18:20-19:00- Idea demonstrations and awards

More about the workshop: The workshop will encompass rapid prototyping as a component of the design and thinking process. It will engage students on how to create innovative solutions and conceptualise ideas before escalating these into a live market environment. It is an inexpensive way to eliminate risk, and the notion of 'think- through doing' will be exhibited during the workshop.

When applying, consider a problem related to one of the categories below, as well as a potential solution. This will then be expanded on during the workshop.

  • Early childhood development
  • Food security
  • Income generation
  • Personal and home safety
  • Public health

An Arduino kit will be awarded to the most relevant and applicable idea as well as collaborative entrepreneurial support from the University of Pretoria's Business Incubator (UPBI).

Target audience: Any registered UP undergraduate and postgraduate student

RSVP electronically by 20 May 2016. Only the first 65 responses can be considered, and a confirmation email will be sent to successful respondents.

Enquiries: Sean Kruger at [email protected] or 012 420 2214.
