Tuks victorious over Pukke

Posted on March 28, 2017

The FNB Tuks got their first victory in five years over the FNB NWU-Pukke (North-West University) as they surged to a 43–28 victory in the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International's round nine on Monday night.

Dewald Naude went over for what he thought was his first try, but the television match official (TMO) disagreed.

In the 11th minute it was Andre Warner from Tuks who opened the scoreboard for the visitors as he went over the try line for a seven-point try to give his team a 9–0 lead.

With a solid drive from a line-out five metres from the Pukke's try line, Elden Schoeman crashed over to narrow the lead to 9–7 in the favour of Tuks.

Tuks' Clyde Davids went over in the corner for a try in the 21st minute to extend the lead to 18–7. Tinus De Beer successfully converted his second kick of the match.

With eight minutes remaining before halftime, Dewald Naude finally got his first try to keep the scoreboard ticking to 25-7 for the men in blue.

After halftime, Pukke's Walt Steenkamp went through a gap to secure a try for the home side underneath the poles. Schalk Hugo converted successfully to leave them at 25–14.

Pukke were punished in the 47th minute as Tuks' De Beer converted a penalty kick successfully to bring the score to 28–14.

It was the teamwork of Pukke's Wilmar Arnoldi and Schalk Hugo that narrowed the gap to 28–21 as Arnoldi went over the try line and Hugo nailed the conversion.

The show belonged to Warner from Tuks as he drove over the line from a scrum to secure his second try of the match and bring the score to 35–21.

After a long decision by the TMO, it was Loftus Morrison for Pukke who scored the bonus-point try in the 70th minute to narrow the deficit to 35–28. Hugo once again converted.

De Beer stretched his team's lead once again with a penalty kick that brought Tuks' lead to 38–28.

In the final movement of the match, Tuks' Sibahle Maxwane crossed the whitewash and rubbed salt in the wounds of Pukke as the visitors claimed a well-deserved 43–28 victory.
