Invitation: Information session on ADHD

Posted on March 22, 2017

The UP Corporate Wellness Programme, presented in partnership with Bestmed Medical Scheme, is pleased to inform you that we are continuing with our monthly group intervention initiative during lunch breaks, from March to October 2017. The information sessions, which will be presented by a Bestmed medical health professional, are aimed at educating staff on a variety of health-related topics and helping them to make voluntary behavioural changes that will reduce health risks and enhance their productivity and well-being. All UP employees should contribute towards building a healthier and more positive workforce.

The first information session will deal with ADHD, or hyperactivity syndrome as it sometimes called. The emphasis will be on the symptoms associated with the syndrome and the criteria for diagnosing ADHD. There is no clear cause for ADHD but a number of theories have been formulated. Three sub-categories of the syndrome will be discussed, namely attention deficit disorder, predominantly hyperactive disorder and a combined type. The characteristics of each will be alluded to.

The possible role of external factors including food, vitamins and preservatives will be highlighted. Treatment modalities available to help patients with ADHD will be discussed.

By the end of the information session, persons who attended should:

  • have a basic overview of the clinical background of ADHD and its symptoms,
  • grasp the principles of diagnosing and treating ADHD, and
  • understand how the environment can be structured to optimise support for those with ADHD.
