Official opening and reinstatement of the gates at the Faculty of Theology

Posted on March 06, 2017

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria (UP) is celebrating its centenary in 2017. The official celebrations start on Monday, 6 March 2017 with an academic devotional service in the Musaion, followed by the inauguration of the open gates in front of the Theology Building on UP’s Hatfield Campus by Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

The gates, a set of the original wooden gates that once guarded the main entrance to the Campus, have been installed in an open position in front of the entrance to the Theology Building, never to be closed again. They symbolise the fact that in the past, the proverbial gates to the Faculty were closed to the marginalised because of a world view underpinned by nationalism, racism, sexism, dogmatism and homophobia. The open gates constitute the Faculty’s confession of past exclusions and signify its orientation towards the future.

The motto of the Centenary is therefore: Gateway to …

The service in the Musaion will start promptly at 10:00, after which guests will move to the area in front of the Theology Building for the inauguration ceremony.
