Message to parents and guardians of UP students

Posted on October 31, 2016

Dear Parents

We would like to update you on the situation at the University of Pretoria:

In the early hours of this morning protest action was initiated by a group of protesters in the Hatfield area, outside the campus. The police were called immediately and brought the situation under control. Although there was some damage to University buildings in the Prospect Street and Festival Street area, all our students are safe.

Please be assured that every effort is being made to ensure that students complete final assessments and examinations for the 2016 academic year. Additional security personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of all students living in UP residences and access control remains extremely strict.

Regarding completion of the academic year, the limited academic programme continues as scheduled and the activities in this regard have not been interrupted.

The examinations will also go ahead as planned. The timetable will be posted today, on the University website and on clickUP.

We urge all students to focus on their year-end examinations at this time and to remain vigilant at all times.

Kind regards

Professor Cheryl de la Rey
Vice-Chancellor and Principal
