Information session on hypertension

Posted on September 09, 2016

The UP Corporate Wellness Programme, presented in partnership with Bestmed Medical Scheme, is pleased to inform you that we are continuing our monthly group intervention initiative during lunch breaks. The information sessions, which will be presented by a Bestmed medical health professional, are aimed at educating staff on a variety of health-related topics and helping them to make voluntary behavioural changes that will reduce health risks and enhance their productivity and wellbeing. All UP employees should contribute towards building a healthier and more positive workforce.

The sixth information session about health problems will deal with hypertension, its prevalence and its impact on health. International diagnostic criteria will be highlighted and the various types of hypertension and how they fit into the disease as a whole, will be discussed. Risk factors for the development of hypertension will be reviewed and the role of lifestyle, genetic and nutritional factors pointed out. Treatment modalities available and screening with a view to early diagnosis will be discussed. The information session will give those present a broad overview of hypertension and explain the role of wellness and lifestyle adaptation in the progression of the disease.

By the end of the information session, those present should:

  • have a basic understanding of hypertension, blood pressure readings and the impact of hypertension;
  • know how hypertension is diagnosed, what the basic principles of treatment involve and which screening tools are available; and
  • understand the relationship between lifestyle choices and hypertension.
