#AreWeSafe Gender and Sexualities Symposium

Posted on August 25, 2016

Dear UP staff and students

The #AreWeSafe Gender and Sexualities Symposium taking place on the University of Pretoria's Hatfield Campus on Friday, 26 August 2016 is a duly approved event. Its purpose is to raise awareness among staff and students of the University of Pretoria regarding the prevalence of homophobia, sexual harassment and violence in South African society, including on university campuses.

In order to combat these issues, the University of Pretoria is currently completing the review of its sexual harassment policies and setting up structures to assist with the prevention of sexual violence and homophobia as well as providing support for victims. A campus-wide awareness campaign will be rolled out during the month of September.

The safety of staff and students is a priority at the University of Pretoria. Sexual harassment, violence and homophobia will not be tolerated. This effort can only succeed if we all engage in strengthening our support and reporting structures.

We call on all students and staff to report all incidents of sexual harassment and violence anonymously on 0800 0064 28.
